Collaboration details

・KEWPIE MALAYSIA launches 210ml dressing using recycled PET

(Effective date: Manufacture on 17th July 2023 onwards)

・Recycle program of PET waste started between Kewpie and Hiroyuki from May 2023

Kewpie group has set a target of reducing at least 30% of plastic emissions by 2030 (Compared with 2018) and has been undertaking various global initiatives to achieve reducing & reusing of plastics across the group. After using recycled PET for 210 ml dressing, the usage of 21 MT of virgin PET can be reduced per year. This is equivalent to reducing 21 MT of CO2 emission per year.

For the new recycle program, rejected PET bottles in the Kewpie factory are collected and sent to Hiroyuki factory for recycling. We started this activity last month and estimate that approximately 400 kg of plastic will be recycled per year.

Background of collaboration

PET bottles are promising materials in terms of recyclability due to its chemical profile. However, in Malaysia, the recycling ratio of PET bottles is only 16% nationwide, which is relatively low compared to other ASEAN countries, and the rest 63% of PET bottles go into landfills and 21% of PET bottles leak into the environment*. The possible causes are collection of used PET bottles for recycling is still not yet common due to low awareness of recycling.

-

The 3 parties in the collaboration are from our supply chain. Hiroyuki: produces food grade recycled PET resin from used PET bottles which are collected in Malaysia, Canzo: produces PET bottles and KEWPIE MALAYSIA: produces dressing using PET bottles for consumers. We would like to promote PET recycling as well as the use of recycled materials to reduce plastic usage, waste and CO2 emission. We hope we can collaborate further to realize the sustainable circular economy in Malaysia.*GA circular survey in 2019
